Philip Bixby holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Texas at Austin (2017) and a master’s degree in musicology from the University of California, Irvine (2019). His research is focused on interdisciplinary investigations of musical modernism, drawing upon the visual arts and philosophy to address historical questions regarding composers’ modernist motivations and their critical engagement with the conventions of the past. Philip’s specific interests include the surrealist movement, György Ligeti, Theodor Adorno, conceptions of musical form in the twentieth century, and theories of the avant-garde. He also plays the piano and maintains side interests in music analysis, writing systems, and historical linguistics. In his leisure time, Philip can be found reading Anthony Burgess novels, watching Jacques Tati films, and listening to way too much rock ‘n’ roll.
