Phil Acimovic
Phil Acimovic is a composer and gamelan musician. studied Javanese Gamelan in Surakarta, Indonesia for two years with master musicians Bp. Wakidi Dwidjomartono and Bp. Darsono Hadiraharjo. Acimovic directs the Yale Gamelan Ensemble and the Smith College Javanese Gamelan Ensemble. In 2018 he organized and managed a U.S. tour of a gamelan gadhon troupe from Java. He served as editor for a book of gamelan scores as part of the Lontar Foundation’s Wayang Educational package.
Acimovic is an active composer of solo, chamber, and orchestral works. His music is quiet and spacious with flexibile performance elements. He studied composition with Kurt Rohde, Sam Nichols, John McDonald, Ken Steen, and David Macbride. In 2018 he served as the first Artist-In-Residence at the Cold Hollow Sculpture Park northern VT. His works have been performed by the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, the Empyrean Ensemble, Chris Froh, John McDonald, and Chris Castro. He lives in Easthampton, MA.
