Ming Wai Tai
Amy (Ming Wai) Tai is a PhD student in Music Theory (2018). She grew up in Hong Kong and completed her BA in Music and English Studies at the University of Hong Kong with First Class Honors. Her research paper on the relationship between the decline in canonic writing and the rise of functional harmony in the 16th-18th centuries was the Global Winner in the Undergraduate Awards (2016) in the Art History, Music, Film & Theater category. During her MA in Music Theory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while she continued with her interest in counterpoint and tonality/modality in Renaissance and Baroque music, she also brought together her background in music and literature by examining narrativity in music. A devoted lover of ballet and modern dance, in her future research she hopes to explore the relationship between music and dance – especially in modern ballet – by drawing on her skills in music and literary theory and analysis.
