Therese-Anne Druart will examine a passage from “The Great Book of Music,” al-Fārābī’s monumental music-theoretical text. Her close reading will take us to the musical practices of his time and culture, his debt to Aristotle’s Analytica Posteriora and Poetics, and the musical role of Arabic poetry.
