The R. J. R. Cohen Summer Fellowship for Musical Performance Studies provides support for structured summer programs related to musical performance, particularly vocal performance, giving gifted young musicians the opportunity to focus on their craft.
Summer programs (such as music festivals, internships, study-abroad programs, and various other performance opportunities) are an important part of many students’ career development: among other things, they allow young musicians to prepare for leadership roles in the music community at Yale and beyond, make relevant contacts for their future careers, explore new repertoire or gain deeper knowledge of works they already know, train with eminent teachers or perform with different groups, gather ideas for senior projects, and generally develop their musical instincts and skills. Since these programs are not equally accessible to everyone and there is little general funding at Yale for summer performance opportunities, the R. J. R. Cohen Fellowship for Musical Performance Studies is intended to fill the musical funding gap and help train the next generation of Yale performers, no matter their financial situation.
Application Information:
Applications are due by April 1. Additional materials (such as recordings, scores, or essays) may be requested at a later point. The committee may contact the references you provide, but written recommendations will not be required with the initial application.
Full funding cannot be promised. Scholarships typically range from $500 to $1000.
Selection criteria include, but are not limited to, financial need, the value of the project for the student’s musical development, and the quality of the application. Although singers (and projects with a vocal performance component) will be prioritized, other kinds of applicants - especially composers, conductors and keyboardists - will be considered.
Application deadline is April 1st, no rolling basis. Decisions will be made by the end of April.
Application (email completed applications to Kristine Kinsella - kristine.kinsella@yale.edu by April 1).
