Yale’s Near Eastern & Balkan Ensemble (MUSI 223) is performing a free end-of-term concert in conjunction with the Beinecke Library exhibition Taught by the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts. As with many of the works on view in the exhibition’s vitrines, the concert repertoire comprises selections of a sacred nature, with individual pieces often reflecting multiple religious traditions (Muslim, Orthodox Christian, pagan/pre-Christian, Jewish). The ensemble will interpret vocal/instrumental compositions in diverse meters and modes/maqamat from Bosnian, Bulgarian, Lebanese, Macedonian, Romani, Sephardic, and Syrian traditions. Both the concert and the exhibition are free and open to the public.
