The paper presented for this year’s conference is titled “Breathing into the Kalfou: Vocality, Breath, and Vibrations.” which sits at the intersection of the breath, the body, and divine communication in Haitian Vodou.

“Karen McCarthy Brown was a scholar of religion and wrote the pathfinding feminist ethnography Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn, which is currently in its third edition. As a scholar, she was known for pushing scholarship on Vodou and often times those narratives that are not always highlighted. She chose to emphasize women as healers and their power within Vodou. She also was one of the earliest scholars to examine Vodou outside of Haiti and in its diasporic context. This award acknowledges a young emerging scholar who we believe is doing pathbreaking work that like, Karen McCarthy Brown, can open up new and more expansive pathways for research into Haitian Vodou.” - Dr. Yanique Hume
